Leisure Time

Interview with John, Scott, Aaron, Bruce and Sammy

JM: What types of facilities were available to help pass the time?
John: We were allowed to go to the gym,we could go to programs to earn good time, and that was about it other that it was like we were just sitting around being bored or getting locked in our cells for bogus reasoning. The jail always did that type of stuff for nothing.
Scott: WE WERE ABLE TO ATTEND GYM,CHURCH,YARD AND IF YOU ARE SENTENCED PROGRAMS LIKE SCHOOL. SOMETÍMES WE WOULDNT HAVE ANY MOVES FOR THE DAY THO BECAUSE WE WERE LOCKED DOWN DUE TO A JAILHOUSE ISSUE. IT ALL DEPENDED ON THE DAY ,THE STAFF AND IF THERE WERE ANY ISSUES. IT ALL DEPENDS.
Aaron: I was only able to do gym and church those are the only leisure times I was able to do the church was nice though I was so peachful to be in church. the gym was fun because I was able to work out run and play basketball. but the gym tends to get to hot.
Bruce: The facilities available to pass time mainly were yard, which was in the morning or afternoon. We had the gym wich Was in the morning or afternoon. We had church wich was in the morning or at night. And we have our programs in the morning and in the afternoon time to gain good time.
Sammy: In order to pass time they gave us gym time around the morning or evening, they gave us yard time around the morning ,or evening. They gave us visits that were An hour long. They gave us church services, and school programs but those were mainly for good time earners. And also we had our recreation time .

JM: Did you have regular access to the entertainment or was competition fierce? Give details.
John: The competition was very fierce so i just mainly didnt watch too much tv. That is an easy way to get into arguements and or fights. There was even assigned days for certain races to watch certain shows on there days to avoid issues. In order to control the tv though you gotta be someone important
Scott: THE COMPETITION WAS VERY FIERCE. WE HAD TO RULE THE TV BY A MAJORITY WINS VOTE. EVEN SOMETIMES THAT DIDNT WORK. ON SET DAYS LIKE A BIG SPORTS EVENT WE WOULD WATCH THAT FOR EXAMPLE THE SUPER BOWL. I JUST MAINLY WATCHED WHAT EVER WAS ON TV AT THE TIME.
Aaron: the competioin over the tv was pretty bad inmates were always changing the channels on each other there were several fights I seen that broke out because someone changed the channel on someone and instead of the person saying anything they just hit the person and the fight would break out.
Bruce: I would say that the entertainment was a majority rules things in most, cases. There wasn't many, good shows on around our recreation time so the men just basicly adapted to what shows we're coming on and we would just rule wich show to watch by a,major rules vote basically. Kinda safe and simple.
Sammy: We didnt have regular access to the television because it is very easy to get into problems that way. So we usually come to an agreement by a unanimous vote that way mostly everyone is happy and satisfied. That way it also stops problem from occurring. The tier workers hold the power mainly over the TVs though.

JM: Did you have a hard time staying in shape while in jail?
John: Yes i did my weight was going up and down due to stress and missing my family. I worked out sometimes.
Scott: YES BECAUSE THEY FEED US SUCH HORRIBLE FOOD. THEY LACK NUTRIENCE AND VITAMINS. AND THE PORTIONS WERE VERY SMALL. THEY GAVE US HEAVY STARCHY FOOD.
Aaron: I had a pretty easy time stayin in shape in jail because the only things to do in there is to sleep, read books, and work out.
Bruce: At first I did have a hard time staying in shape but I had to put a exercise schedule together to stay fit.
Sammy: Yes I had a hard time. Because I was so stressed out I would maintain a poor diet of snacks .

JM: How often did you get to go outside? What did you do outside if you were allowed to? If you were not allowed to go outside what could you do for exercise?
John: We could only go outside in the good seasons when it was convienient for them and it was for an hour a day mainly in the Morning or afternoon. I mainly walked around or played basketball.
Scott: WE WENT OUTSIDE ONCE A DAY. WHEN OUTSIDE WE CAN PLAY VOLLEYBALL,PLAY BASKETBALL OR WORK OUT. THERE WAS ALSO A TABLE FOR CARDS AND CHESS.
Aaron: I was not allowed out side but when I went to the gym I would run 3 laps do 50 pushups then 50 sit ups, 50 chin ups, then I would do 50 leg lifts then I would do 50 squats and then 50 lunges. then repeat.
Bruce: We went outside atleast every day or night one time. That was either to go to yard, church, your programs abd the gym. If we we're inside we would just work out in our cells or on the unit.
Sammy: We often went outside once a day. When we were outside we could play basketball,we could walk around,we could play chess,we could sun bathe. Or relax.

JM: Did the jail offer church services? If so, what were they like and when were they held?
John: The jail offerd church services to only christians really or pentacostals. They were ok services bit they need to Bring services in for everyone even the muslims. They were mainly on thursday nites ,and sunday evenings.
Scott: THE JAIL OFFERD SERVICES ON MAJOR DAYS SUCH AS THURSDAY FRIDAY AND SUNDAY. THEY WERE GOOD SEEVICES. THEY SHOULD OFFER MORE THOUGH.
Aaron: the church offered church services they were held on sunday and sometimes on Monday. they were very peaceful and they brought clear mind to the inmates and peace to the inmates how ever the church many talked about sin it really didn't talk about what churches on the outside talk about.
Bruce: Yes the jail did offer church services. The services were very Moving and at time emotional. They were held on sundays,Wednesday, and I believe Saturday.
