JM: Did you find it difficult to get along with other inmates? Please give examples to explain why you did or didn't. Christian: Nope, not at all because I knew half the people.
It was crazy because everyone was like "hey, look
who it is!" They quickly split us up fast. Claire: I stayed to myself. This jail is pretty safe,
there is constant supervision all around you. You
have a chance at getting a single cell once you
have been there about a week, which makes it a
lot more relaxed.
JM: What types of things did you have to do to avoid problems or fights with other inmates? Christian: I'm a jokester. I made it fun. I wouldn't say I
made it cool to be in jail, but I made it kind of
relaxed. I made lieutenants, CO's and inmates
laugh. I worked every job and got lots of extra
privileges. No-one even tried to get me in a
fight. I almost started one fight on my own the
whole entire time I was there. Claire: I didn't hang around clicks or groups, there is a
lot of gossip in those types of places, and it is
very easy to get caught up in gossip and that's
what creates problems. As long as you are not in
there asking people personal questions like what
they're in jail for or how long they will be
there, you should be ok.
JM: Were you able to choose an inmate as your cellmate if you knew one? How often would your cellmate(s) change? Christian: Yes, I was able to choose. It depends on if you
have conflict with other people or how long you
have been there. There are some single cells that
they assign according to seniority. Claire: You never get to choose your cellmate, if you
decide to not take a single cell then you are
stuck with whoever they decide to put in your
room, you could get a different roommate every
night if people get out or are moved around.
