Telephones

Interview with Christian and Claire

JM: Did you have regular access to telephones?
Christian: Yes. You have to ask the officer if you can use the non pay phone or there are pay phones.
Claire: Collect Calls only. There use to be a free 30min phone call once a week for inmates but I have heard that they stopped that.

JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls?
Christian: I had free calls because I worked. They would give you phone passes for working. 15 minute phone calls for free. When I left I probably still had 200 phone passes. Collect calls probably cost about 5-10 bucks.
Claire: Well its about 2.90 for 30mins on the collect phone. so it depends on how often a person calls home.

JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out?
Christian: You can buy phone cards to call Mexico and stuff like that. All you had to do was ask to use the phone unless you were calling collect.
Claire: The only time you need someone to buy a phone and is if they have a cell phone and even then the inmate has nothing to do with that.

JM: Did the jail screen your calls?
Christian: Oh yeah, every last one of them. I seen people get locked up over bad phone calls.
Claire: Yes, you are being recorded the entire time while using the phone. They have a voice recording that stays the same until you are released.
