JM: What types of facilities were available to help pass the time? Karl: Cards, checkers, chess, handball or walk around
the handball court,, drawing, the church people
would come from time to time. You could buy
pens and paper. Christine: In my pod I had class , meetings, movies . Occasionally we
played wall ball and baseball . I was in a program pod so we
did our workbooks . There was a little library so we could read
if we wanted to . We had some church people come and give
a concert once that was cool . Drew: I was in school pod so other than school, we had
basketball, a ping pong table, board games,
cards, work out area, a Radio, and a projector
to watch movies. This was considered a honor pod
so most pods do have any of this but
basketball. . . . . .
JM: Did you have regular access to the entertainment or was competition fierce? Give details. Karl: There were books and magazines floating around
that were harder to get a hold of. To get a
newspaper or magazine, someone on the outside
would have to buy you a subscription, so the
things to read inside the jail are in high
demand. Christine: I'm not sure what u mean . Every one got a fair chance to
participate . It was more like a first come first serve . The good
seats to watch a movie . Who got there first to get the good
books . It was like that . Class and meeting wasn't to big of a
deal . Everyone had a seat . Drew: Yes in D-8 we did have access to this
entertainment really no competition there was
many board games and decks of cards that where
available and movies where always updated on a
sd card so we had a good selection of movies and
basket ball we had two to use
JM: Did you have a hard time staying in shape while in jail? Karl: Yes and no. You're not at a five star restaurant
so you don't get the best food. I walked a lot
in the handball area. I have stomach problems,
and couldn't eat all the foods they served
without throwing up. Christine: All you so is eat . The regular food sucks in thee . It's gross .
So you have to by snacks . At MDC they don't have a yard or
anything big enough to get proper exercise . A lot of people
gained a lot of weight . Drew: Very, Other than run, I would not use work out
equipment or play ball, it was all very
unsanitary most inmates did not mind touching
equipments but I was aware of all types of
fungus or infections in jail so I would only jog.
JM: How often did you get to go outside? What did you do outside if you were allowed to? If you were not allowed to go outside what could you do for exercise? Karl: Usually anytime you are out of your cell the
outside was open. If somebody was caught
smoking outside or something you could lose the
privilege to go outside for the day. Christine: They let us out about four hours a day . But in that time you
had to do everything . Get on the phone , take a shower , eat ,
clean . It's not enough time to get exercise in . I would just play
wall ball or walk around . Drew: Usually every day as long as we where not locked
down or it was raining.door for out side was
always open for us. . .
JM: Did the jail offer church services? If so, what were they like and when were they held? Karl: I didn't personally attend any but yes, they
were offered. Christine: Yes they did . We had bible study once a week . It was good .
A positive message is always good Drew: not really but some people would come in once a
week for bible study. if you consider that
church, I never attended only a few inmates
would attend.
