Inmates

Interview with Nelson, Chris and Brad

JM: Did you find it difficult to get along with other inmates? Please give examples to explain why you did or didn't.
Nelson: Did I find it difficult? Yeah, sometimes. I think because everybody got an attitude, they dealing with a case, and nobody wants to be in jail. I was able to socialize and make a few friends but its not easy because everyone is on edge, and worried about how other people are going to act. In the workhouse especially, people are looking for a fight.
Chris: Yes, because I felt like there was special treatment for African AMericans. They treat you like trash regardless of what you have done. YOu have to remember to stick with a group of people when things were rough.
Brad: I am a young white male. In franklin county jail youmg white males are preyed upon by black inmates they think that they are all weak because most white boys are from well to do families which means they cant fight

JM: What types of things did you have to do to avoid problems or fights with other inmates?
Nelson: I have a medical condition so I was in the medical bay most of the time. This helps a lot to avoid a lot of fights. If there are no fights going on people get bored. People look for a reason to fight. They aren't content if things are running smooth.
Chris: You have to be able to stand up for yourself and not let people steal from you or walk on you. Never get involved in anyone elses issues. Let people iron out there differences on their own its not your problem to deal with it is theirs. Kepp out of others business
Brad: I didnt avoid them i took them head on. This.is.the.only way to survive the workhouse is to fight and always under any circumstance stand up for.yourself . If you fail to.do this you will not eat and any commisary you get will be stolen imkediately it is a hard.road.to.travel for sure

JM: Were you able to choose an inmate as your cellmate if you knew one? How often would your cellmate(s) change?
Nelson: No, there are no cells. Its more like open bays with bunks. You could choose who you want to bunk with but there are no 2 man cells.
Chris: No you could not choose it was driven by numbers. Depends on how long the cellmate was sentenced or if they got into trouble. They did not place baby rapers with felons
Brad: Your cell mates are all on the same types of cases. I was on felonies so most of us were.in there.for a long time together very rarely do they change
