Inmates

Interview with Susan

JM: Did you find it difficult to get along with other inmates? Please give examples to explain why you did or didn't.
Susan: I was pretty good at dealing with difficult personalities, as I had spent years working with people with mental ilness and the womans prison is full of women with mental health issues. I found it difficult to actually "LIKE" many people. I am very quiet and relaxed and the women there are pretty loud and outgoing.

JM: What types of things did you have to do to avoid problems or fights with other inmates?
Susan: I pretty much stayed to myself. I read a lot of books. I also always tried to find jobs that would keep me off the dorm for as long as possible. I was always volunterring for work details and even spent some of my time participating in the work release program which housed us separately from the other inmates.

JM: Were you able to choose an inmate as your cellmate if you knew one? How often would your cellmate(s) change?
Susan: Although I did not get to choose my room mates the officers did try to accomodate and put similiar people together. Although I feel like there may have been a few times when they put certain people together that they knew would not get along, just for their own amusement. Having a long sentence was tough because the majority of the people were in for a much shorter time, so I was constantly getting used to new people.
