JM: Did you find it difficult to get along with other inmates? Please give examples to explain why you did or didn't. Jorge: I only found it difficult to get along with the
blacks and that was because thay are loud
bonoxious rude people who have no respect for
themselves let alone others. Laura: No. I just kept to myself until I figured out how it
all worked. Keep to yourself, and everyone pretty
much leaves you alone. There will be questions, and
its up to you how you want to answer them. Terry: Before I got classified, I was in a gymnasium with about 200 other
inmates. It had one guard, and the entire thing was gang
controlled. I had on guy try to steal my bedding, and told me a
looked like a woman. Eva: Not really I was pretty quiet and stayed
to myself I
ended up being put in a cell with 2
roomates I ended
up becoming great friends with we
stayed together
for 5 months until they got out then it
was my turn
JM: What types of things did you have to do to avoid problems or fights with other inmates? Jorge: Avoid? Man theres no way that I could avoid
fighting. It was either fight or be taken
advantage of. Laura: I mostly liked to stay in my room and read. I am a
non violent person by nature, however during my
time there I found myself in 2 fights and in
segregation on 2 separate occasions for fighting.
Close quarters, and a bunch of catty women
together for prolonged times makes it hard to be
harmonious at all times. Terry: You had to keep your head low, hide your possessions and make
friends that you would have never made in any other
circumstances. You suck up to the guards. You give people part of
your meager allowance of food. You try to do favors for people
who could reciprocate them. Eva: You don't have to do much just stay to
yourself and
don't get disrespectful. Most girls don't
want to fight
because in somecases it ads days to your
sentence if
your sent to the hole its known as dead
time. Just
don't think your better then then ext
inmate because
noone really wants to be there and
everyone did
something to be sent there
JM: Were you able to choose an inmate as your cellmate if you knew one? How often would your cellmate(s) change? Jorge: I'm not sure that I understand your question
here. What do you mean by " choose an inmate"? Laura: No. I had made friends during my holding time
downtown and we tried to stick together, but after
classification (the way that they separate you based
on the level of your crime) you just get stuck
wherever they want to put you. Misdemeanors in one
pod, felonies in another. Terry: No, I had an assigned celly. After my final classification, I had the
same celly for the duration. I was lucky that my celly was a decent
guy who I got along with. Eva: No you cannot just choose I only had a
few roomate
changes due to two being uncompatable
and the
others went home. When a bed is empty
they fill it
pretty fast
