Telephones

Interview with Roxie and Jaime

JM: Did you have regular access to telephones?
Roxie: Yes, we could use the phones from around 8:00 a.m. to, I believe, 10:00 at night.
Jaime: For the most part, yes.

JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls?
Roxie: The charges were expensive, about $7.50 for 15 minutes. As the calls were collect, the inmate paid nothing, but the families were charged an exorbitant amount.
Jaime: Collect calls only, at the expense of whoever you are calling. I dont know how much an average is, its a lot more if its long distance. The calls are expensive.

JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out?
Roxie: No, it was charged to the receiving party.
Jaime: No,it was collect calls only

JM: Did the jail screen your calls?
Roxie: I believe they did, but I could not say for sure.
Jaime: The message that was played to whoever you call says this call is being monitered and recorded.
