Telephones

Interview with Darlene, Ryan and Janis

JM: Did you have regular access to telephones?
Darlene: Yes I did from 6 am to 10 pm
Ryan: No
Janis: Yes.

JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls?
Darlene: For local pre-paid call's the charges were $2.25 to connect and 6 cents per minute for 15 minutes. for collect calls it was $2.25 to connect and 7 cents per minute, but they restict the amount of collect call's you can make in a 30 day period. Often the charges on the phone bill were much more then what they claimed to be charging.
Ryan: They are collect calls, I believe it was 1.00$ to recieve the call.
Janis: I'm not sure, but I'm pretty sure it was very expensive.

JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out?
Darlene: Eventually yes. Telmate restricts the amount of phone call's you can make in a 30 day period once those call's run out your forced into purchasing pre-paid calling time.
Ryan: No.
Janis: No.

JM: Did the jail screen your calls?
Darlene: Yes, the phone has a recording at the beggining of every call saying: all calls are subject to recording and monitoring.
Ryan: Yes.
Janis: Probably.
