JM: Did you have regular access to telephones? Cesar: Yes, every time we were able to get out of the
cell we were able to use the phones. Tom: I DID HAVE ACCESS TO PHONES BUT HAD NO ONE TO CALL
EXCEPT FOR MY WIFE CARRIE ANNE MOSS DEEN, AND AT
THAT TIME SHE KNEW THAT I HAD A COCAINE PROBLEM SO
THERE IS NO WAY I WOULD BOTHER HER AT WORK,
ALTHOUGH SHE ALWAYS KNOWS WHERE I AM, WHEN YOU
LOVE SOMEONE TIME AND SPACE ARE SIMPLY AND
EQUASION THAT TWO PEOPLE OVERCOME. Bruce: yes phones can be used as often as wanted on your
out time , Jon: Telephones were available on out time which we got
once or twice a week usually due to the jail not
having enough staff to let us out on the regular
scheduled out times.
JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls? Cesar: Outrageous. I'm not sure of the exact cost, but
my
family told me it was unreal. Tom: STANDARD CHARGES Bruce: local calls are a connection fee only, and five
mins long, after five mins they cut you off, you
can call the same number back if you want but it
cost for a local collect call, connection i think
it $1.40 for connection fee, weekly cost is hard to
saysome inmates are on the phone non stop, for me
if trying to get bailed out i might make 5 or ten
calls, if not i'd make 1 or 2 calls to let someone
know i was in jail and maybe 1 or 2 calls when i
found out how long i'd be there and thats about it
, so maybe six or seven calls in a six month
period Jon: The charges were extremely expensive about $15.00
for a 15 minute phone call, but the lines to the
phones were always backed up and not everyone got a
chance to make the calls they were trying to
JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out? Cesar: No. You could call out collect to phones that
weren't blocked to collect calls Tom: NO I DID NOT Bruce: no, you can call collect to any land line phone Jon: You could have people put money on there phones or
on your phone account.
JM: Did the jail screen your calls? Cesar: There is a sign stated that calls could be
monitored but not sure if they actually were. Tom: I WOULD HOPE SO Bruce: i am fairly sure they have some kind of monitoring
system Jon: They stated they were monitoring all calls so I
assume they did.
