JM: How many different blocks were there? Cesar: Not sure how many floors there were, but each
floor
had a east and west. Like 6E was 6th floor East
side of the building. I think there were nine
floors. But first two or three floors were
offices and intake areas. Tom: THE SPOKANE COUNTY JAIL IS ENDLESS, YOU COULD NOT
LIST ALL OF THE BLOCKS THAT ARE IN USE AT THIS TIME Bruce: its not really blocks. in spokane county jail it's
like thisafter you've been booked in you go to the
second floorthen the depending on when you get
booked in you either get classifed that day or if
its too late then the next day, they classify you
acording to your charges, 3rd floor east is mens
pods, instead of cells there is 10 pods that have
10 beds and usually several people on the floor as
well and each pod has its own shower, theres two
floors shaped like an L the center of the L is the
day room with tables and chairs a deask for the
guard, and a small 2 sided shelf with books and a
door that goes out to a deck with basketball hoop
but your not allowed to play basketball the side
of the L that points to the middle of the jail
isnt real wide, it's like a short wide hall that
opens up to the day room, it has several visiting
booths, and several payphones that can be used
anytime you are out in the day room and not locked
up. they usually split up the out time either
between north and east or west walls or upper and
lower floors. 4th floor is the same set up but
it's for people with special needs or that are on
meds, 5th floor is 2 man cells both east and west.
and you only get out 40 minutes a day to shower
make calls ect, you get no out time on the
weekends, when you do get uot they do it by walls
east wall gets their 40 mins and lock down then
after lunch the north wall gets their 40 mins,
alternating days who gets A.M. and who gets P.M.
6th floor is the hole. single man cells and 20
mins a day out time, no out time on weekends Jon: 12 blocks located throughout the buildings
JM: Did they have names? If so, what were they? Cesar: Yes, there are floors and then there were
assigned
east and west. Tom: OF COURSE THEY HAVE NAMES BUT AT THIS POINT I DO
NOT RECALL ALL OF THEM Bruce: theres, the 5th. the pods, and the annex or up on
six Jon: 2West, 2 East, 3 East, 3 West, 4 East, 4 West, 5
East, 5 West, 6 East, 6 West, Annex A & B buildings
JM: Which types of inmates were housed in the different blocks? Cesar: I am not sure, I was just concerned with mine.
And where I was there were every type of crime
except violent crime. Tom: DEPENDING ON THE LEVEL OF YOUR CRIME DEPENDS ON
WHERE YOU WILL GO Bruce: kitchen workers are on two east, misdemeanors on
three or the pods, dings on 4,felony on 5th, six is
the hole or detention floor, and 2 west is intake
and classification Jon: 2 west: Intake, 2 east: Kitchen, 3 East: Women 3
West: Low security inmates non violent crimes, 4
East: Psych Ward, 4 West Hospital Ward, 5 East & 5
West Medium & Max Security Inmates, 6 West & 6
East Lock down and Protective Custody, Annex Child
Molesters and Protective Custody, A building: work
release, b building Kitchen, and general
population
JM: What do you remember being the nicest and worst parts about the different blocks? Cesar: I was only in one block so I really don't know
the
differences. Tom: EVERY THING WOULD BE KEPT VERY CLEAN KIND OF LIKE
IF YOU WERE IN THE MILITARY, IF YOU HAVE HAD REAL
MILITARY EXPERIENCE IT WILL BE EASIER FOR YOU TO
ACCEPT YOUR PUNISHMENT Bruce: worst part about the fifth floor is the little out
time you get, forty minutes a day unless they are
understaffed then it's only 20 minutes, witch it
seems like most of the time, and the twenty four
hour lock down on weekends, so after your twenty
or forty minuter of out time friday you're locked
down until monday, the nicest part about fifth
floor was it's quite, down in the pods its always
loud Jon: I do not remember anything nice about any of the
different areas that I stayed at inside the Jail
Facilities, I do remember however seeing a lot of
nasty uncleaned walls and ceilings, a lot of
things that were falling apart or vandalized and
the fact that the cell is so small and you are
locked away inside it for about 23 hours a day
with super limited out times.
