Interview with Tammy, Tiffany, Sarah, Rachel and Betty
JM: What types of facilities were available to help pass the time? Tammy: they had a section with some weights so when we had
outside time we were able to workout. or they had a
law library where you can sign up to go and look up
stuff about your case. Tiffany: Basketball. Speedwalking around the basketball court.
Newspaper (1) available to read on the table. Tv. Card
games going on. Certain "cool" officers would let inmates sing
at night. Let the woman showcase talent singing and us
laughing kinda like bonding and momentarily forgetting our
soroundings and situation. Read alot. Playing cards was my
favorite. Sarah: A tv and the phones and there was also books.
The best way to pass time is to just eat and
sleep. The phones there is usually a line for
and the shower is very hard to get into and they
always have a shower list which no one follows . Rachel: when i was there,i didnt get to do anything but
lay in my bunk and eat left over cookies, there
was no t.v,no books, magazines,if there was stuff
up there to do it would make the time go by alot
faster but nothing was there but a lot of bossy
females(not officers) Betty: there were no facilties or anything to do while
i was in there i went upstairs and was in a
small area that did not have any books, magazines
or anything to do and we were not able to leave
the little place that we were in i think the tv
came on for about an hr
JM: Did you have regular access to the entertainment or was competition fierce? Give details. Tammy: the tv's were for all of us in the dorm but of
course you get the girls that were there and
controlled the tv. (I watched whatever they chose) Tiffany: Certain times to watch tv, get books from the book cart. Also
certain days and times for basketball court. The book wagon
that comes around is the luck of the draw as far as timing and
them having something worth reading to make the day (time)
go by. You tend to read whatever you can get your hands
on. Sarah: There is only one TV in the place with about 25
girls and most of the time everyone is sleeping.
Jail sucks and sleeping is the best way to kill
time. people didnt really argue over the tv that
much because if you did the TV got turned off
and everyone lost out . Rachel: i did not see any entertainement, the only thing
i saw was a couple pages of the news papers and
comics, there was litereally nothing to do,there
was a t,v but there was nothing showing on the
t,v it just went blank,i jus sat in my bunk i
didnt know what to do Betty: there was no entertainment but the girls and
women inside the jail some of them were funny
but there was nothing to do up there or anything
to read the tv only came on for about an hr and
there was one newspapers and pages were missing
so i couldnt read it
JM: Did you have a hard time staying in shape while in jail? Tammy: no cause i would go outside on weekdays for our free
time and walk or use some of the weights Tiffany: Not at all. There is no junk food unless you order it off
canteen. And you gain husky solid weight from all the carbs. Sarah: You get rec once a day if the weather is good
and you can always run in place in your room . Rachel: when i was in jail i was never let outside, but
even got out of my floor meaning where all the
cells were except to be escorted to court Betty: i did not have a hard time staying in shape
because i was only in there for about a day and
a half and if i was in there for a long time the
only workout i could do is from my room like sit
ups or stuff like that
JM: How often did you get to go outside? What did you do outside if you were allowed to? If you were not allowed to go outside what could you do for exercise? Tammy: weekdays for an hour a day Tiffany: No outside. Inside basketball court with open view to outside.
For one hour twice a week if i remember correctly. You
definatly look forward to outside rec time Sarah: We went outside once a day if we were lucky and
the only thing to do is play basketball and just
sit outside and tan from your knees down. Rachel: i did not get to go outside one time, the only
time i went outside was when i was
released, there is nothing to do to get exercise
in there Betty: I was not able to go outside because I was not
in there long enough to do anything. There was a
play area were some of the girl went to
JM: Did the jail offer church services? If so, what were they like and when were they held? Tammy: yes, church people would come in to jail a few
times a week. We would be out in the hallway and
they gave us bibles if we didnt have them. We
prayed and sometimes was even offered communion Tiffany: Yes you were able to attend church services, but only if you
were on the list. ( which was made the pevious week) Sarah: They offer chuch services but I have never gone
to any . They dont offer them in the block its
in a different location but still at the jail. Rachel: the jail never offered me church services
because i go to church every saturday and nobody
told me anything about a church there Betty: I'm bot sure if the jail offer church services.
It there was I'm sure I would have went to church
