Interview with Tammy, Tiffany, Sarah, Rachel and Betty
JM: Tell us about the pre-sentencing process: Tammy: once arrested, brought into jail in holding cell
waiting to be processes. then once booked (
fingerprints, picture, and health information taken,
your brought to a cell and asssigned a cell and
bunk. You stay there for the duration of your stay. Tiffany: Before i was finally sentenced there was alot of back and
forth as far as calender calls in front of the judge that
changed twice due to initial judge retirement. 2 failure to
appears that were suspended due to a warrent (and arrest)
for FTA although courtdate was changed and system never
updated it. Sarah: The people of the court looked at my previous
history and if I was on probation or not. I pled
out so I was out of jail the next day and was in
court for the next three months . The jail
itself is not as bad. The food is still nasty
and trying to get a pillow would never happen ! Rachel: i had 2 felonys and 2 mistemiters 1 of each was
droped because that was my first time every be
arrested,i go to court next month to see what is
going on with my case,s hopefully my felony
would be droped i am trying to get my life
together and get a job Betty: for my presentencing i had to pay department of
children and family back the money that i used
for food stamps and i was on a pti program and
report to department of corrections untill the
money was paid back that i owed from department
of children and family services
JM: Did you have police stop by your house for questioning? If not please give us details on how you came to be arrested. Tammy: No police at my house. I was arrested in a store
for shoplifting Tiffany: Sale charge. I was arrested by swat during coordinated sale/
search warrant. For sale of cocaine. The was a search
warrent for me and my home. I was thrown on the ground
and searched from there. My house was searched and phone
was taken. Although the takedown was harsh and by
surprise. I can say i was treated like a lady from then on. Sarah: No, I fell asleep in a empty house that was not
mine and got charged with trespassing and also
got charged with everything that was in the
house like drug equip.I was sleeping and then a
cop came in threw the window and told me i was
under arrest and took me to jail Rachel: my first arrest i did have police come to my
house because i stole from a store and the
manager at the store got my got my moms tag
number so by the time she got home the police
were already there looking for me but not for my
2nd arrested Betty: i did not have a police to come my house and
question me,the police just came to my house and
arrested my for a warrant i did not even know
about then i was at gun club until i got bonded
out then was released i spent about a day and a
half in jail
JM: What was court like? Please give as many details as you recall. Tammy: when going to court, your handcuffed and foot-
shackled then transported in a bus with other
inmates or by a correctional officer in a car.
Your placed in a holding cell until its time for
your case or when they bring us all into
courtroom. We then sit in the section where the
jury sits (unless of course your having a jury
trial) which I never had so dont know about that.
The judge would call your name, you identify who
you are. They explain charges, and offer a deal
or just sentence you or let you go home. THen
you sit and wait for other inmates to be taken
care of then brought back to holding cell and
transported back to jail. Tiffany: Very official. From the outside it seems like good vs bad in
regards to prosecution and defense. Although as an inmate
you are sometimes brought in before the judge which enables
yourself to hear the bargains and nogotiations between the
former and the latter. Along with their lunchplans. Sometimes
together. Sarah: Court was very slow. You go down stairs from the
Jail to Courthouse they have at the jail. You
sit in a room with the other males or females
and wait for them to call your name and then go
threw a door that leads to the courtroom and
then the judge is there and you cant speak and
you get released or sent back with a new court
date Rachel: I do not like going to court because they say to
be there a speciftic time like 8.30 am but dont
get seen by a judge untill maybe 10am or maybe
later, other than that the officers and public
defenders are nice, also we were in a holding
cell for over 2 hrs and it was freezing Betty: when i went to court i had a public defender he
represeted me for the charges that i had,i had a
male judge my first court date was about a week
after i got bonded out the court offered to me
to check in the department of corrections and
pay back the money i owed from deaprtment of
chiildren and family
JM: What were your original charges? What did you end up being convicted of? Tammy: Original and also convicted of Shoplifting Tiffany: Sale of cocaine. With hold adjudication... Pending
successfull completion of probation time and terms. Sarah: TRESPASSING - STRUCTURE OR CONVEYANCE
MARIJUANA-POSSESS - NOT MORE THAN 20 GRAMS
and 5 counts of DRUG EQUIP-POSSESS - AND OR USE
and I was convited of everything but 3 counts of
drug equip Rachel: my 2nd charges were petity theif and i think
they might drop them Betty: my original charge was food stamp fraud i did
not know i was commiting fraud and my charge was
dropped
