Interview with Tammy, Tiffany, Sarah, Rachel and Betty
JM: Did you have regular access to telephones? Tammy: phones were on certain hours of the day and calls
were collect. if there was alot of inmates or
fights over the phones then there would be a list to
sign up when you would use the phone. Tiffany: Yes. Almost all day till 11:30 pm. Although you must have
money on your pre-paid inmate call account. Actually your
family has to handle that from the outside. $2.10 plus tax for
15 min. Sarah: Yes. Phones were just a payphone but whoever you
were calling had to have a certain collect call
program on the phone to recieve the calls unless
you were calling a goverment building or public
defender Rachel: the only phone calls i was able to make was in
the holding cell Betty: i had regular use to a phone while i was in a
holding cell but when i went upstairs anybody
that i had to call had to pay for it
JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls? Tammy: depends on where the people lived on how much the
call would cost but all calls were collect to the
person you were calling Tiffany: $2.10 per min plus tax. I have spent more than 60 a week.
Some people call home once a week, some once a day. I
called home constantly. Sarah: The average inmate spends about 50-80 dollars a
week on phone calls. Calls are over 2.50 and
last 15 minutes. Rachel: once i got upstairs i could not make any phone
calls so ihave no idea Betty: i think it was 1-2dollars a phone call and the
person phone had to be able to accept collect
calls
JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out? Tammy: no calls were all collect. Tiffany: No but your family would have to make sure to put tnetix( jail
prepaid miniutes) on the phone Sarah: No. You need tnetix on your phone Rachel: I dont know anything about a card Betty: i did not have to buy phone cards because the
person i was calling was able to accept collect
calls on there house phone
JM: Did the jail screen your calls? Tammy: they said they did, supposedly they listened in to
the calls to listen for planned excapes or maybe a
way to get contraband into facility. Or to listen
to someone discussing a case with outside people. Tiffany: Yes. Recorded And can be pulled up @ anytime if needed. Sarah: Yes . It says before the person picks up they
monitor your calls Rachel: yes thats what i was told Betty: i am sure they did because my caller said it was
being recorded
