JM: What types of facilities were available to help pass the time? Scott: drug programs art class religious services gym
work detail also na/aa program came in to
discuss drug use i played basketball worked out
studyed for my ged went to churchalso bible
study i did whatever i could do to pass the time
awy.it is best to stay busy on a regular basic Gary: A SMALL OUTDOOR RECREATION AREA OR BASKETBALL
COURT OR EXERCISE COURT THAT YOU COULD ONLY GO OUT
ONE HOUR A DAY. A LIBRARY WAS INSIDE THE FACILITY
AS WELL WHERE YOUWOULD GO ONE TIME A WEEK FOR AN
HOUR TO GET BOOKS AND TAKE THEM BACK. ALSO YOU HAD
A TV AREA. Armando: The different faculties to help pass time were,
computer classes, Toastmaster classes, which is a
class for public speaking, GED classes for persons
who did not graduate from High school. You also had
outdoor gym as well indoor recreation for when it
was really hot and humid outside and you didn't want
to go out.
JM: Did you have regular access to the entertainment or was competition fierce? Give details. Scott: yes i had regular access to the entertainment at
the jail just have to wait your turn and at time
competetition was fierce like the phone system
you had to wait in line basicly call next there
is only a select amont of phones in each blocks
but the inmates out number the phone triple Gary: THE ENTERTAINMENT WAS PROVIDED BY SMALL RADIOS
WITH EARPHONES. WHICH COULD GET SOME RADIO
STATIONS WHEN YOU ARE NOT WATCHING THE TV WITH
THEM ON THE TV FREQUENCY. MOST PEOPLE LIKE TO LOOK
AT SPORTS WHICH WAS THE COMMON GROUND OF MOST
INMATES. THIS ONLY HAPPENED AN HOUR A DAY FOR THE
TV AND ALL DAY FOR THE RADIOS IF YOUR BATTERIES
WOULD LAST THAT LONG. Armando: Yes I had regular access to entertainment. If you
are talking about the tv. There were tines when what
to watch on tv would become a problem. One person
wants to watch one program and others want to watch
SOMETHIBG ELSE. Most of the time it was resolved
without any fights
JM: Did you have a hard time staying in shape while in jail? Scott: i didnt have a hard time staying in shape while
i was at the jail because everybody dont work
out Gary: NO. I JUST DIDNT WANT TO HAVE A HART ATTACK OR
STROKE IN JAIL BECAUSE OF MY SIZE SO I WOULD ONLY
EAT VEGETABLES AND FRITU AND WOULD TRADE MEAT FOR
THEM. Armando: Yes. Commissary is full of chips, cookies and cakes.
A lot of starchy foods so it's hard to stay in shape
if you don't exercise
JM: How often did you get to go outside? What did you do outside if you were allowed to? If you were not allowed to go outside what could you do for exercise? Scott: the only time you go outside is when you go to
court the jail have an inclosed part built on
the unit surrounded by cender blocks with bars
around it Gary: THERE WAS AN AREA THAT WAS HALF WAY OUTSIDE AND
HALFWAY INSIDE SURROUNDED BY BRICKS AND FENCE. I
NEVER WENT OUTSIDE. YOU COULD DO PUSHUPS PLAY
BASKETBALL AND WALK AROUND IN THE 25 X 25 FOOT SPACE. Armando: I was allowed to go outside every other day. When I
went outside I would walk around the yard until it
was time to go in. If I wasn't allowed to go
outside, I would do situps.
JM: Did the jail offer church services? If so, what were they like and when were they held? Scott: the jail offers church services for all differnt
religions they are held weekly and it was good
people from the outside would come in Gary: ON SUNDAYS THEY WOULD OFFER CHURCH SERVICES AS
WELL AS RELIGIOUS MEETINGS OR BIBLE STUDY ONCE A
WEEK. MUSLIMS USUALLY PRAYED IN THEIR ROOM OR I
THINK THEY HAD A SPECIAL TIME FOR THEIR SERVICES. Armando: The church did offer church services. They were
general services for all denominations. The church
services were held in the gym.
