Interview with Tim, Adrian, Maria, Ashley, Lindsay, Victor, Deborah and Katherine
JM: How many different blocks were there? Tim: I don't understand the question. Adrian: alot Maria: I believe that the floor that I was on had 6
blocks on it; 3 blocks on each but I'm not 100%
sure of this. Ashley: THERES SO MANY AT THIS JAIL BUT IM NOT SURE Lindsay: We called them "modules." At CCSD there were
several of them per tower. At NVC, the number of
modules were less, but there were a total of 72 of
us per module, with an upper tier and a bottom tier.
I was in the upper tier. A total of eight of us per
unit. Victor: About 20 or 21, I am not sure. There were a lot. Deborah: I believe there is 6 floors and 12 modules on each floor. Katherine: I AM NOT SURE BUT I KNOW I SAW AT LEAST 4
DIFFERENT PODS.
JM: Did they have names? If so, what were they? Adrian: letters Maria: The blocks are designated by numbers and letters.
I can't remember the block I was in, but I believe
it was something like 13K and so on. Ashley: WE JUST HAVE FLOORS,THEN THE MODULES LIKE
A,B,C,D.THEN LIKE YOUR BED NUMBER Lindsay: At CCDC I was in module 4K, while at NVC I was in
module 2B. Victor: No names, just letter and number combinations. I was
in Unit 4 then 5 then 1. Deborah: They used letters from the alphabet and the floor number. So I
was in 5K Katherine: I DONT REALLY REMEMBER WHAT THEY WERE CALLED I
THINK THERE WAS A NORTH TOWER.
JM: Which types of inmates were housed in the different blocks? Adrian: cant remember Maria: Those charged with more serious crimes are housed
separately from those charged with lesser crimes.
The first time I was in jail was spent in more of
an open dormitory setting (South Tower), whereas
the time I am describing on this questionnaire was
spent in North Tower. Ashley: THEY ARE ALL MIXED UP AT THIS JAIL.EXCEPT NORTH
TOWER HAS VIOLENT OFFENDERS.ALSO THE PEOPLE THAT
NEED MEDICAL OR ARE MENTALLY MESSED UP THEY GET TO
GO TO THE MEDICAL FLOOR OF THE JAIL. Lindsay: At CCSD there are two towers: The North tower held
the really bad inmates (who commit unspeakable
things), while the South tower held prostitutes and
drug addicts. I was housed in the South tower. The
North tower had all of the cells, while the South
tower had beds in multiple rows. Victor: minimum security, isolation(max security),
overflow
from county jail were all housed in separate
blocks.
Every time of criminal was there: felons in
Isolation, misdemeanors in Minimum. It is hard to
say who was where because you can't ask, they
don't tell, and inmates tend to lie about charges
when talking to other inmates. Deborah: Inmates who go work and work in the kitchen and laumdry
were in Module 5L. 5K the module I was in were women
women just doing time or getting transfered to prison. Katherine: WELL FROM WHAT I REMEBER OR I HEARD PEOPLE
TALKING. THE NORTH TOWER WAS FOR GANGS OR VALIANT
INMATES. THEN THEY HAVE THE OPEN PODS WERE THEY
DIDNT HAVE CELLS ITS JUST ONE BIG ROOM AND THAT
WAS FOR REGULAR INMATES
JM: What do you remember being the nicest and worst parts about the different blocks? Tim: Henderson jail was by far more comfortable that CCDC. Adrian: I liked that I got to lay down and sleep with
out worring about waking up to a man beating me
for not making quota Maria: South Tower is an open environment which I liked
better than North Tower. You could talk quietly to
anyone in their bunk around you whereas North
Tower put you in a small room with one other
inmate. I found that very claustrophobic plus in
North Tower, the personal habits of your single
cellmate become that much more pronounced since
it's just you and one other person. Ashley: THERES NOTHING NICE ABOUT ANY OF THE BLOCKS.BUT
THE WORSE WAS THE FECES THAT WERE LEAKING FROM
UPSTAIRS AND COMING THROUGH THE CEILING.OR THE
COCKROACHES.ALSO THE BATHROOMS WERE EXTREMELY
NASTY AND THE WATER PRESSURE SUCKED SO BAD AND YOU
DRANK THE SAME WATER THAT CAME FROM THE
BATHROOM.YOU GOT DANDRUFF REALLY EASY BECAUSE THE
WATER IS SO BAD THERE. Lindsay: The nicest part about the blocks is that our unit
was very close. We helped each other out and we
talked. It was easier to determine what was going
on, because in jail, every man/woman for themselves.
The drawback to this is that you get no privacy when
you want to. Victor: The nicest thing was being able to take a shower,
during most of my time I was in isolation and was
let out to shower once a day, sometimes once every
two days. During my time in holding I was not
allowed to shower at all(worst part) and the food
was inedible throughout. Deborah: I would have to say to me the block I was in was boring and
time went by so slow because there is only so much to do in a
twenty four hour period of time being struck in a module all
day. But the women in 5Lwere able to leave and work for
several hours which would have been nice. Katherine: I DIDNT LIKE ANT OF IT AT ALL, BUT THE OPEN ROOMS
WERE NICER TO BE IN BECAUSE YOUR NOT CONFINED
INTO A CELL BUT THEN AGAIN THERE IS ALOT OF
NOISE. BUT THE NORTH TOWER YOU HAVE A UP STAIRS
AND YOU HAVE DIFFERENT TIMES TO GO EAT AND FREE
TIME
