Interview with Tim, Adrian, Maria, Ashley, Lindsay, Victor, Deborah and Katherine
JM: Did you have regular access to telephones? Tim: No. Adrian: yes Maria: Yes, I was able to use the phones of any of our
"free time" breaks. Ashley: YES WE DID WHEN WE GOT BREAK Lindsay: Yes, but you had to pay for them, and they weren't
cheap. The person you want to call had to pay for
the phone and you can only use the phone for that
number. The phones were only cheap for attorneys
and other members of the Clark County criminal
justice system. Victor: Yes, but I could not afford it, I was given one free
call. Deborah: We had access to the phones during free time. Three hours in
the morning and three hours in evening. Katherine: THERE ARE CERTAIN TIMES THAT YOUR ALOAD TO USE
THE PHONES.
JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls? Tim: Could only call collect Adrian: na never had anyone to call Maria: I believe the average local call cost about $2 or
$3. I called home every day and it cost about $25
a week. Ashley: ITS LIKE $1.50 JUST TO CONNECT AND ITS LIKE A
QUARTER A MINUTE.THEY PROBALLY SPEND OVER 20 BUCKS
A WEEK Lindsay: While in the detention center, I calculated how much
per minute the phone was, which is about 8 cents.
It all adds up. I have no idea how much someone
would pay for a phone, quite a lot. Every inmate
wants to talk to someone everyday. We are very
lonely. Victor: There is a connection fee of $10.00 then a per
minute fee of $4.00. I saw a few inmates go through
$50 per week on phone calls but they would only use
the phone for a few minutes. Deborah: My family bought a phone card it was $1.10 a minute. The
average inmate spends near $20.00 a week on phone calls. Katherine: WELL NOT SURE OF THE COST PER MIN ON THE PHONE.
BUT ON AN AVERAGE PER WEEK I WOULD SAY AT LEAST
15.00
JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out? Tim: No Adrian: na Maria: The inmate doesn't buy the phone card at CCDC, the
person you are calling does. Buying minutes makes
it so you can call a specific phone number and the
charges are deducted from that specific phone number. Ashley: NO THEY SET UP A ACCOUNT THROUGH IC SOLUTIONS Lindsay: No. My parents (who I called) had to pay for the
charges. Victor: No, phone cards were not allowed, only collect calls
using the jail's preferred carrier. Deborah: I did. But you could also collect call. Katherine: I THINK THEY HAD THAT OPSION BUT THE PEOPLE THAT
YOU CALL I KNOW PUT TIME ON THERE PHONES
JM: Did the jail screen your calls? Tim: Yes, and my ex obtained a copy of my calls. Adrian: yes Maria: There is a sign above the phone that advises
inmates that all calls are subject to recording
and review. Ashley: YES THEY SAY THAT YOURE BEING RECORDED Lindsay: I have no idea, but I am pretty sure they did. Victor: Yes, every word was recorded and could be used
against you if they saw fit. Deborah: Yes. It is in writing posted in e walls near the phones and the
animated operator also informs you they screen your calls. Katherine: I DONT KNOW IF THEY DID BUT I THINK IT SAYS THAT
THEY CAN RECORD YOUR CALLS
