Medications

Interview with Tim, Adrian, Maria, Ashley, Lindsay, Victor, Deborah and Katherine

JM: Did you always have access to necessary medications?
Tim: No. Aspirin at scheduled times.
Adrian: yes just ask and fill out a kite
Maria: No, I did not. They were actually extremely remiss in terms of providing me with all my prescribed medications.
Ashley: YES YOU COULD SEE THE NURSE IF YOU FILLED OUT A REQUEST FORM
Lindsay: I never took any medications, but others had to wait a certain time to get their medication from the nurse.
Victor: No, to get medications you would have to fill out a "Medical Kite" that could only be given if you see a nurse who happens to have one.
Deborah: I didn't need any but the women who did had there meds when they needed it.
Katherine: NO YOU COULD ONLY TAKE MEDS WHEN IT WAS THERE TIME ONCE IN MORN ONCE AT NIGHT.

JM: How did you get your medications?
Tim: Stood in line.
Adrian: threw the nurse
Maria: During the booking process you are asked by a nurse or a medical tech what prescriptions you take and how often. If you need something else while incarcerated, you fill out what is called a "kite" and request any OTC medications. You are also able to buy single doses of aspirin, antacid, etc. from the commissary.
Ashley: WELL THE NURSE WOULD CALL YOUR ROW AND YOU WOULD LINE UP.WHEN YOU GOT TO THE NURSE YOU WOULD TELL HER YOUR NAME AND ID NUMBER A ND SHE WOULD OUT YOUR PILLS IN YOUR HAND.AFTER YOU SWALLOW THEM YOU HAVE TO SHOW HER YOUR TONGUE SO SHE CAN SEE THAT THERES NO PILLS IN YOUR MOUTH SO YOU CANT GIVE THEM TO SOMEONE ELSE
Lindsay: I didn't get any, but at least twice a day the nurse would come around and distribute the medications to the inmates with their cart. Had to wait in line for it.
Victor: I do not have any medications that I take regularly. I could have got medications by filling out a medical kite.
Deborah: Facility nurses were scheduled to come as needed to provide medication for inmates. Forming a line one by one they got their fixes.
Katherine: I MYSELF DIDNT TAKE ANY MEDS. BUT THEY CAME IN TWO TIMES A DAY IN THE MORN. AND EVENING. AND THEY GAVE IT TO YOU IN A CUP.

JM: What types of punishments were incurred for abuse of drugs? Did you ever witness this?
Tim: Don't know
Adrian: dont know didnt go there
Maria: During my time there I had no knowledge of anyone using illicit drugs. (You are required to submit to a strip search before you are brought upstairs into inmate housing.)
Ashley: ONE TIME I DID.THE GIRL SPIT HER PILLS IN HER CUP AND THE C.O.SAW HER DO IT.SHE GOT THROWN IN THE HOLE
Lindsay: There is this one girl who took soma so she could sleep. The C.O. caught her trying to sell it to another inmate and went into solitary confinement for who knows how long. She also got another charge on her record. They don't play around.
Victor: If you violated any laws or rules you would get time in 'the hole' and would prosecute you if you get caught with contraband. Most likely a person would get prison time. I did not ever witness this.
Deborah: Yes. One of the inmates came in and smuggled cocaine. She and two other inmates were caught loitering in the restroom area while snorting. They were all sent to the hole for two weeks.
Katherine: NO I NEVER DID SEE ANY ONE USE OR ABUSE THE DRUGS. BUT IAM SURE THAT YOU WOULD GO TO THE HOLE FOR THAT
