Pre-sentencing

Interview with Adrian, Maria, Ashley, Lindsay, Victor, Deborah, Katherine and Tim

JM: Tell us about the pre-sentencing process:
Adrian: well it wasnt all that bad other than the vice cop that brought me in keep in mind I had been in there alot for prostitution, anyways he said something that stuck with me he said you wont change you like being nothing and a nobody all you will ever be is a hoe. I would like to thank him for his ignorance because of those words I ran and never looked back I spent ten years of my life scared to leave because of a pimp and was beat and used in ways people will never understand but now I live in cheyenne wyoming work for the veterans hospital went to collage and just won custody of my three kids right there in a vegas court room. I look in the mirror now and see so much more its nice to love myself again I wish I could help other girls so much. I was very deep in when a light went on and I left. so thank you for being brutally honest with your feelings tords that way of life.
Maria: The 18 days I spent in custody were while waiting to be sentenced. I couldn't make the bail amount, so I had to remain in custody.I was given jail clothes--underwear included--as well as sheets and towels, a cup and a pencil, and assigned to a room/cell with another female inmate.
Ashley: WELL THIS TAKES FROM WEEKS TO MONTHS.THEY WILL LOOK UP YOUR PAST HISTORY WITH CRIMES OR WHATEVER AND GO FROM THERE.AT PRE-SENTENCING THEY WILL TELL YOU WHAT KIND OF TIME YOURE LOOKING AT.YOU CAN EITHER GO WITH A DEAL THAT THEY HAVE CAME UP WITH TO GIVE TO YOU OR YOU CANP[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[ [[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[ [[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[ [[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[ [[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[ [[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[ [[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[;'''''''''''''''''''' ''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''']]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]];;;;'[ [[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]] ]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]] ]]]]]]]]]]]]][ TAKE IT TO TRIAL.
Lindsay: It started with an arraignment, in which I was assigned with a public offender. We discussed my case and any plans thereafter. I attended the university at the time, so it was time consuming and frustrating. I attended court multiple times for the next few months. I even went to an arraignment to determine my qualifications for probation, in which I had to fill out an Interstate Compact, which took a long time. They asked all kinds of personal questions, even your childhood. When that was complete, I had to go for a probation interview. I waited a few months until my sentencing date. It was very horrifying.
Victor: I was arrested at home, taken to court, released for "no complaint on file," given a court date, I went back and accepted a plea deal which included fines to pay. I could not pay the fines and so I was not in compliance with my sentence, a warrant was issued so I was arrested again and sentenced to time for not being able to pay my fines. I could not do community service as I am disabled.
Deborah: Since I've been living in Vegas I had gotten arrested twice. Once for Domestic Violence and the second for battery on a protected person. For both cases I received Community service, Anger management and some fines. I did all of my community service but didn't pay all my fines and and finish anger management. So I had a warrant out for my arrest.
Katherine: DONT REALLY REMEMBER ABOUT PRE SENTENCING. NOT SURE WHAT PRE SENTENCING IS, IF ITS THE TIME THAT I WAS WAITING TO GO TO COURT. THATS ALL IT WAS JUST WAITING AFTER BEING IN HOLDING CELL 2 DAYS BEFORE I EVEN GOT TO A BED UPSTAIRS.I WAS VERY COLD ,DIRTY AND MISRABLE.

JM: Did you have police stop by your house for questioning? If not please give us details on how you came to be arrested.
Tim: Three police cars showed up at my residence to arrest me for traffic warrant.
Adrian: no
Maria: It was a domestic dispute that took place in my home and the police were called. I was arrested at my home and taken to CCDC in Clark County, Las Vegas, Nevada. The police were very nasty to me and even taunted me with the fact that I was going to jail.
Ashley: NO THEY DIDNT COME BY MY HOUSE.I WAS A PASSENGER IN A STOLEN CAR.WELL WHERE THE GUY PARKED THE CAR THE PEOPLE DIDNT RECONIZE IT SO THEY CALLED THE COPS.WELL WE WENT TO A FRIENDS HOUSE FOR A LITTLE WHILE AND LEFT.WHEN WE WENT BACK TO THE CAR WE GOT IN AND WHEN WE WENT TO LEAVE A COP RAMMED US.HE RAN AND DIDNT GET AWAY BUT I DIDNT TRY TO RUN SO THEY GOT ME TOO.
Lindsay: I was arrested on location on The Strip one August night back in 2011. I just ended the summer semester and was celebrating, so I was drinking. Strangers I didn't know thus stopped me and started harassing me. I tried to get away from the situation, but they persisted. I took out my knife I usually carry around for protection (the first time I have ever used it). I pointed it at them and told them to back off, then eventually put it back in my pocket. I guess they felt threatened (and when I say they, I mean 7 people), so they started beating me up and I fought back for survival, since I was surrounded and couldn't escape. At this time I blacked out. The police were called and were convinced that I was the assailant, so they arrested me. I had to go to the hospital prior to the detention center to stitch a very deep cut. A few days later I was bailed out and they gave me an arraignment court day in October. The process goes quicker when you are an inmate.
Victor: Yes, initially, and I was arrested for being at home as it "violated a temporary protection order (TPO)" even though I had a conflicting judicial order stating that I could "remain in possession." I was later released and accepted a plea deal. I got a warrant for not paying my fines and was arrested during a routine stop by an officer.
Deborah: The first time time I got arrested for Domestic violence the police came to my house. The second time I was arrested was at the bus stop and the third time when I got picked up on the warrant was driving a vehicle with expired registration tags. That was when they took me in for the warrant.
Katherine: SOMEONE HAD CALL IN AND THEY TOOK ME FROM HOUSE. ANOTHER TIME I GOT PULLED OVER FOR SPEEDING AND I HAD A WARRENT.HE SAID IF HE RAN MY NAME AND I HAD NO WARRENTS HE WOULD LET ME GO. BUT I HAD A WARRENT OUT OF HENDERSON SO HE TOOK ME IN

JM: What was court like? Please give as many details as you recall.
Tim: Humiliating. Demeaning. Abusive. Dirty.
Adrian: It was always a joke to me because I knew I would be released and back at work that night jail was a vacation from all the beatings for me.
Maria: It was a pretty large, modern, wood-paneled court room with a fair amount of armed officers. The room was clean and quiet and the environment was calm, mostly civilized. The sentencing judge was efficient in the way he moved through the cases and was actually fairly pleasant throughout the process.
Ashley: IT WAS LONG.I TOOK IT TO TRIAL BECAUSE I DIDNT KNOW IT WAS STOLEN TO BEGIN WITH.THEY HAD WITNESSES THERE AND EVERYTHING.WELL THANK GOD I WASNT WITH HIM WHEN HE TOOK THE CAR BECAUSE THEY IDENTIFIED HIM BUT THEY COULDNT IDENTIFY ME.WELL HE ENDED UP IN PRISON AND I DID ALMOST A YEAR FOR CONSPIRACY AND ATTEMPT TO POSSESS A STOLEN VEHICLE.
Lindsay: Court was in the Regional Justice Center, which was a very beautiful building. Looked very clean. Of course when you enter, you had to go through a metal detector, which didn't really take long. I went upstairs to where my courtroom was (this never went to trial since I plead guilty and the reason why I plead guilty was because I blacked out and scared to death that I actually started it all, when it turned out later that I didn't, which was too late). My mother and I sat down in the "criminal" section. The witness/victims section was right next to ours. The room (each of them I was in) looked exactly like you would see on television, but with computers. The security officers, and even the judge were very helpful. It was very nerve-racking each time we went. I was scared for my life, not knowing what will happen.
Victor: I accepted a plea deal, my public defender did not let me explain my side, I was not allowed to speak to the judge. I tried explaining the conflicting judicial order but my explanation was not heard by my public defender. I could not pay my fines so I did time.
Deborah: I got picked up on the warrant and was booked by 3am, I went to court that same morning at 8. Sat waiting for my name to be called along with 20 other individuals, inmates and some not. I hear my name and approach shackled and handcuffed. The District attorney spoke first, Of how much trouble I'd been in since I got there and recommended the three month sentence. My Public defender tried to ask for more time, but the Judge who was my original judge said I'd had more then enough time to finish this and sentenced me to 64 days. I cried all the way back to my module and for a few hours after that.
Katherine: GOT PULLED OUT OF CELL THEN BROUGHT TO A HOLDING CELL THEN BROUGHT INTO COURT WAS HEARD THEN BROUGHT BACK TO HOLDING CELL. WAITED FOR OFFICER TO BRING ME BACK UP STAIRE TO BED. THE HOLDING CELL WAS TERRIBLE. COURT WAS QUICK, THEY HAD SHACKELS ON AND WERE HOOKED UP TO OTHER PEOPLE.

JM: What were your original charges? What did you end up being convicted of?
Tim: No Bail Warrant for $90 traffic ticket that did not get paid on time. Then transported to CCDC for two $100 checks that bounced and failing to make payment on previous check. After almost two years charges were recently dismissed. Checks were paid November 2009, but DA would not dismiss.
Adrian: solisiting prostitution too many times to count but I am a stronge woman ready to help other woman learn how to love themselves love does not come with a price tag. I am proud of my past because of who I am today.
Maria: I was charged with two counts of assault and was convicted (a plea deal) to one count of misdemeanor assault.
Ashley: POSSESSION OF A STOLEN VEHICLE AND CONSPIRACY TO POSSESS A STOLEN VEHICLE.I ENDED UP WITH ATTEMPT TO POSSESS A STOLEN VEHICLE AND CONSPIRACY FOR ATTEMPT TO POSSESS A STOLEN VEHICLE
Lindsay: They wanted to charge me with assault with a deadly weapon (which was a felony), but instead I was charged with attempted batter with a deadly weapon, which turned out to be a gross misdemeanor, thank god!
Victor: Violating a temporary protection order. That is what I was convicted of, I was supposed to pay fines but I live on Social Security and could not afford it.
Deborah: My original charge was battery on a protected person.
Katherine: I HAD A PETIT LARCENY CHARGE.
