Interview with Tim, Adrian, Maria, Ashley, Lindsay, Victor, Deborah and Katherine
JM: What types of facilities were available to help pass the time? Tim: None. Kept in isolation and/or holding cell most
of the time. In Henderson other inmates were
allowed to watch TV or play board games. Adrian: books I loved the books Maria: When you're block is allowed free time you can
either take a shower, watch TV (one TV on low with
captions), use the rec yard, or talk to other
inmates seated in the common area. I mostly read
taking advantage of the small library of paperback
novels available near the CO's desk. Ashley: THERE WAS OF COURSE CHURCH FOR US TO GO TO.THEY
ALSO HAD A WHOLE BUNCH OF DIFFERENT CLASSES LIKE
AA,PARENTING,ANGER MANAGEMENT.DOMESTIC
VIOLENCE,DRUG ABUSE,SELF CONFIDENCE CLASSES.YOU
COULD ALSO TAKE CLASSES TO GET YOUR G.E.D. WHILE
YOU ARE IN JAIL.WHICH I THOUGHT WAS REALLY COOL
FOR THE ONES WHO DIDNT FINISH SCHOOL AND WOULD BE
THERE A WHILE Lindsay: During our "free time" we could go "outside" (which
was an enclosed patio), but we could play
basketball. A lot of us just ran around and hung
out. There is also a chapel and some classes
available (Alcoholics Anonymous, etc). You can also
take classes and get your GED, which is very nice. Victor: I would work out in my cell during isolation and
read a lot of books that are provided to any of the
inmates. I was allowed time to spend in the "day
room" where there is a T.V. but it was always
showing whatever the Corrections Officer(CO) wanted
to watch. Deborah: We only had the recreation yard in the module. But you had the
option of going to church and pregnant women to classes.
Inside the rec area was basketball. And you could walk or run
around the rec yard. Inside the module there were a decent
selection of books to read. If you had a paper and pencil you
could draw or write. Also watch television. A lot of this girls
would braid each others hair. Katherine: WELL THEY HAVE CLASSES THAT YOU CAN GO TO. THEY
HAVE CHURCH DIFFERENT TIMES . CLASSES TO GET YOUR
GED. THEY HAVE TV AND BOOKS TO READ. TIME GOES BY
REALLY SLOW WHEN YOUR IN JAIL. ALL YOU CAN DO IS
SLEEP OR GO SOME CLASSES THEY ALSO HAVE OUTSIDE
REC. TIME
JM: Did you have regular access to the entertainment or was competition fierce? Give details. Adrian: yes Maria: Again, there was one TV on low with closed
captions for the dialogue. Whoever wanted to rush
out of their cell when "free time" was called and
grab the remote was pretty much in charge of what
channel and show we watched. You needed approval
from the CO to use the rec room. Ashley: YES EVERY TIME I SIGNED UP FOR A CLASS I WAS
ALLOWED TO GO.I NEVER SEEN ANYONE GET TURNED DOWN
UNLESS THEY GOT IN TROUBLE OR FORGOT TO SIGN UP
FOR IT THE WEEK BEFORE.OTHER THAN THAT ANYONE WAS
ALLOWED TO ATTEND BUT THE GIRLS WENT SEPERATE THAN
THE MEN. Lindsay: The competition wasn't even there. We all took
turns. None of us really wanted to play basketball,
some of us just wanted to run around or Read while
"outside." Some of us watched television and agreed
to certain shows. Others just wanted to draw, or
take a shower, and what not. Victor: I had regular access to books, there was always a
food selection, there wasn't really any sort of
competition. Books were cleared out of cells every
week because some inmates would start to hoard
books. Books were available on a rack in the day
room. They T.V. was always at the CO's discretion. Deborah: Well the Television yes there was always lots of women who
wanted to watch different shows so there was always a fight
for that. Then there is the phones. Which for me was my
entertainment because I missed my family. But yes the phones
were the first thing most of the women would rush for when
free time was called. Katherine: YES THERE WAS ENTERAINMENT THERE SUCH AS T.V.BUT
YOU HAVE TO WATCH WHAT OTHER PEOPLE ARE WATCHING
BECAUSE THERE IS ONLY 1 T.V. NO EVERYONE WANTED
TO WATCH THE SAME THING SO THERE WAS ALWAY
ARGUEMENTS OF WHO AND WHAT TO WATCH. AND OUT
SIDE
WAS HARD IF YOU WANTED A BALL BECAUSE THERE WAS
ONLY 1 OF THEM ALSO.
JM: Did you have a hard time staying in shape while in jail? Tim: Not there long enough, but food at CCDC was
disgusting. Would probably have lost weight or
died from starvation if I had stayed any longer. Adrian: yes Maria: The only good thing to come out of being in jail
for 18 days was that I lost 15 pounds. You can
exercise in your cell or in the rec area. Many
inmates did walking laps around the common area on
their breaks. Ashley: NO I DIDNT HAVE ANY PROBLEM STAYING IN SHAPE.I
WALKED EVERY BREAK AND I DIDNT EAT MY BREAD EVERY
MEAL.I HAVE SEEN PEOPLE GAIN A LOT OF WEIGHT IN
JAIL BECAUSE NO EXERCISE BUT JG
Lindsay: Actually, no. Since I had all of that free time, I
ran around "outside," did push ups, did yoga, and I
stretched. I even gained a bit of weight while in
there. Victor: In a way I did. I was able to work out a lot doing
sit-ups, crunches, jumping jacks, push ups, leg
lifts, etc. It was hard to keep my weight up though
because of the lack of nutritious food and the small
portions given. Deborah: No not really. I usually tried my best to utilize the rec yard and
walked laps regularly during free time. Katherine: WELL I WOULD SAY THAT THAT WAS UP TO THE
individual. IF YOU WANT TO WORK OUT THEN YOU
COULD GO OUTSIDE TO THE REC ROOM.
JM: How often did you get to go outside? What did you do outside if you were allowed to? If you were not allowed to go outside what could you do for exercise? Tim: Never Adrian: once a day Maria: I was in jail during the height of summer and it
was very hot in the rec area so I only used it
once during my 18 days. Ashley: WE GOT TO GO OUTSIDE ALMOST EVERYDAY.WE WENT
OUTSIDE EVERY BREAK SO THATS 3 TIMES A DAY.WE HAD
TO SPLIT THE BREAKS WITH THE MODULE NEXT TO US
THOUGH.WE WOULD WALK.PLAY BASKETBALL.AND JUST DO
EXERCISES.IF WE COULDNT GO OUTSIDE WE WOULD JUST
WALK AROUND THE MODULE Lindsay: Every chance we could. We had at least three "free
times" during the day. I just hung out with
friends, talked, played typical playground games,
ran around. It was enclosed, so it was difficult to
actually see the outside world. Victor: Only when switching units, we would walk in shackles
from one unit to the other. I could only exercise in
my cell without any sort of equipment. Deborah: We were allowed outside in the morning and at night. I would
play basketball or exercise. You even just stand around
outside just to get fresh air. If you were not allowed outside
you couldn't get exersise. Katherine: I THINK YOU COULD GO OUTSIDE A COUPLE OF TIMES A
DAY IF EVERYBODY IN POD WAS GOOD IF NOT THEY TAKE
THAT TIME AWAY. YOU COULD PLAY BASKETBALL , WALK.
IF COULDNT GO OUT PEOPLE JUST WALKED AROUND THE
POD.
JM: Did the jail offer church services? If so, what were they like and when were they held? Tim: Not that I know of Adrian: yes they offered but my guilt was so strong and
deep that I felt I didnt deserve there help wow
that really sounds sick to hear Maria: I know that they did offer religious services but
that's all I know. I wasn't personally interested
so I didn't read about them as an option. Ashley: YES THERE WAS CHURCH.I THINK CHURCH WAS HELD ON
FRIDAY.THE CHURCH PEOPLE WERE EXTREMELY NICE TO US
IT WAS VERY ENJOYABLE Lindsay: They did, but I never attended any of them, so I
don't know the exact details in pertaining to this
question. Victor: Yes, they were held once a week in all denominations
depending on when the religious coordinator was
available to hold services. Deborah: Yes they provided church services. It was twice a week for an
hour. Unfortunately I never attended so I wouldn't know exactly
what it was like. But from what I heard a lot of the women were
pleased with it. Katherine: YES THEY DO HAVE BIBLE STUDIES. I THINK THEY WERE
HELD A COUPLE TIMES A DAY I NEVER WENT SO I DONT
KNOW WHAT IT WAS LIKE
