Telephones

Interview with Brad, Brit, Chuck, Ben and Carl

JM: Did you have regular access to telephones?
Brad: As I stated earlier the phone calls cost $4.89 for the first min. then .89 cents a min. so the answer is no.
Brit: yea 2 phones for 60 people maybe 5 minutes every other day
Chuck: telephones were available but expensive.
Ben: Yes there was proper access to phones.
Carl: Phones were readily available--early to late--- Pecking order to be noted---black white and Hispanic phones---took a while to figure out

JM: What types of charges applied for calling people? How much money would you guess the average inmate spends per week on phone calls?
Brad: The New Jersey inmates paid $1.60 for the first min. then .03 cents a minute....
Brit: like 3 dollars the first minute and then 80 cents aafter that
Chuck: the phone rates were in the midst of changing when i arrived. charges depended on where you were calling to. obviously the farther the call the more it cost. i believe at the end of my stay the base price for a call was more or less 2.00 for the first minute or so and .49 for additional. i could be wrong.
Ben: I think its about $2 a minute. I guess the aveage inmate spends about $100 a week.
Carl: I used 100 buck in two weeks just doing short legal calls

JM: Did you need to buy phone cards to call out?
Brad: You can buy phone time thru commissary or your family could call a company name CBS to put money onto their phone.
Chuck: you did not purchase an actual physical "card" persay, however time was available for purchase through commisary slips. incriments varried from $5 to $20. this ofcourse was at the time of my stay and may have since changed as they were in the process of changing commisary companies when i was leaving.
Ben: No phone cards aren't allowed we could only call collect
Carl: You can--but I called collect

JM: Did the jail screen your calls?
Brad: There was an automated message that said they could screen these calls....all except known legal calls.
Brit: yup
Chuck: if they did i was not aware of it and they most certainly would not tell me.
Ben: Yes the jail screened calls
Carl: Third party allways listening
