Interview with John, Raquel, Colby, Nikki, Lea, Hoyllwood, Woody, Pat, Jeremy, Lekisha, Gary, Ricky and Warren
JM: Did you find it difficult to get along with other inmates? Please give examples to explain why you did or didn't. John: No. I was not in long enough to make any enemies. Raquel: No. But I am a social person. Although sometimes
it's better to just be quiet and read a book. Colby: At first, Yes. As the classification process can
take up to a week depending on what pods have
beds available to put you in an area that you
would get along in or depending on what type of
crime you have commited... Nikki: no, I was housed in a trustee unit and the girls
were helpful and nice Lea: No but some try to one up so its best to keep to
yourself. Hoyllwood: I didn't even try to get a long with anyone there.
I stayed relatively to myself for my stay. Woody: some Pat: Yes, because I'm gay and even guards called me names and
picked on me. Jeremy: Yes, at times I found it difficult to get along
with other inmates. It's bound to happen when you
put a bunch of criminal strangers with different
personalities, mental disorders and different
races together in a closed space, fists will
start flying sooner or later. Lekisha: I was in a minimum security so alot of younger girls 18-20
and well they were ery hard to get along with but other then
that it was alright very clean pod Gary: I had a few problems with a couple
people that thought they
were macho but did like to bget into
fights so I would
mainly. Stay to myself. I didn't like
getting in trouble. Ricky: its always hard. bexar county has a big gang
problem. you just have to be smart about who you
socialize with and watch what you say because
somebody will always be there to check you on it. Warren: Yes for the most part we all got along as long as you follow the
INMATES RULES. There are some people that had nothing to
lose mixed in with us but for the most part stick to yourself but
don't show ANY weaknesses. It was especially hard to get
along in the heat. Or after a fight it like got everyone ruffed up,
and we're on edge like every one wanted to jump in .
JM: What types of things did you have to do to avoid problems or fights with other inmates? John: I had to slap a guy in the face with a chancla
because he wanted to make me his bitch. Raquel: Nothing really. It's like being at home with
your family, sometimes you get mad at those you
live with, you can't stop that. Take a step back
and ask yourself if what your mad about really
matters, if not, let it go. Colby: I pretty much got along with everybody, as
classification officer will place you in the
correct pods depending on your attitude,
behavior, crime and/or any past difficulties. Nikki: mind your own business, don't talk bad about
anybody, stay in your bunk as much as possible Lea: all i did was read and sleep. Hoyllwood: I dunno... I just stayed to myself and if someone
asked me a question, I would answer it and go back
to my thoughts. You're thoughts are the only
things that keep you sane. Woody: didnt do anything gotta roll gotta roll Pat: Hide in cell Jeremy: First thing you have to do to avoid future
problems and fights in jail is ironically, FIGHT!
In jail you're always being watched even when you
think you're not. So when your first
confrontation happens and you back down, well
you're marked then as a coward. Because people
that don't back down are sending a message and
that message is: If you try to fuck with me you
got another thing comin. Lekisha: I would maintain to myself on my bunkr the most part didn't
really like to interact with people thats how problems and
rumors start its a chalenge in there every single day with
different obstacles to over come and get through nobody is
your friend you must always remember that Gary: stay to yourself avoid getting into
conflicts mind yoyur own
business humble yourself you do not
have control over
anything but yourself don't touch
anything that is not belong
to you stay in your area if you know
somebody is not going
to like it don't do it is the best Ricky: you have to watch your mouth mostly. you can get
yourself into more problems than any one else. I
was involved in 2 fights because of problems from
the outside world. you have to be careful with the
guards in bexar county also because instead of
messing with you they take it out on the whole unit. Warren: The best advice is to just keep your eyes out of others eyes
and try to stay busy doing thing church GED classes etc stay
away from the problems also stick to your kind. I had to stay
with the white people . I am from another state and have no
friends in this state so I was very venerable.
JM: Were you able to choose an inmate as your cellmate if you knew one? How often would your cellmate(s) change? John: No. Colby: No Nikki: I don't know, I did't ask or know anyone. Lea: NO that is the dumbest question ever. its not
college dorms its jail. Hoyllwood: nope... Woody: choose i thought this was jail didnt know we got
to choose anything Pat: Never have a choice, seriously? It's Bexar county! Jeremy: No, we weren't able to pick and choose our
cellies. When they first process us into the
jail, they interview us prior to assigning us a
cell. That's when they ask if you have a problem
with certain people of a certain gang or of a
certain race, or if you're homosexual, also the
type of crime you're there for also determines
where they put you and with who. Lekisha: No I was in a dorm there was about 20of us in there no
privacy what so ever. Amd I think its better not being able to
choose because in think thatvwould cause lotsbof troublev Gary: No you are not allowed to choose Where
is assigned to be in with you is the one
you will be house with there's usually a
race somebody there before you even
arrived Ricky: you dont get to pick and choose your cell mates.
it all comes down to classification. you can have
a new cell mate everday or have the same one for
your duration. Warren: No they had a cell mate there in the room he was feed to
another floor then I was given another cell mate. I had no
choice in the matter.
