Interview with Maria, Tommy, Mark, Marilyn, Rafael and Blair
JM: How often could you receive visitors? Maria: twice a week Tommy: twice a week Mark: You are allowed 2 half hour visits a week Marilyn: you get two thirty minute visits a week, and if you
work in the jail u get three Rafael: Twice a week Blair: Inmates were allowed two 30 minute visits per week. There were
three different days that family could visit. I was a porter so I got an
extra visit per week.
JM: Was the check-in process lengthy for those who came to see you? Maria: yes about a hour Tommy: no Mark: I don't know Marilyn: my kids and husband would come to visit and they
said yes it was lengthy and they are slow.
depending on the time a day it was longer in
evening and weekends Rafael: No my visitors never really had a problem Blair: Yes. If the lobby was crowded then my family would have to wait up
to an hour, sometimes longer. My family would come early in the
morning to beat the crowds.
JM: What was the visiting environment like? Maria: behind the glass Tommy: no contact visits Mark: talk thru glass on a phone Marilyn: DISGUSTING... first of all they don't clean this
area for inmates or visitors. So you are putting
your mouth up to a phone u don't know what the
person before you did to it or if they were sick.
and you have no privacy because u have other
inmates in the room with u and can hear everything
you say Rafael: Loud inmates yelling at their vistors. Blair: The visiting room was to alleys separated by a piece of glass. There
were 12 sitting areas. We spoke through telephones, sat on
uncomfortable metal seats in cold and smelly conditions. We were
watched by the tower. The only good thing was that if the guards
liked you, or if it was not busy, the guards would give you
additional time with your family.
