Leisure Time

Interview with Blake, Tyra, Greg and Eric

JM: What types of facilities were available to help pass the time?
Blake: WE had TV, board games, and books.
Tyra: Books and Television
Greg: We had TV, Books, Lots of Books. It was really hard to read with all the noise, We also had games to play and we did get a newspaper once or twice. We would mostly just play games and talk to each other. We made our own entertainment the best we could.
Eric: In the tanks there is TV, books, cards available on commissary, and maybe a chess board. Rec yard with a pull up bar is also available. Once you got to the barracks however there was ping pong, multiple board games, and TVs. Also radios are available on commissary, but these cost extra.

JM: Did you have regular access to the entertainment or was competition fierce? Give details.
Blake: It was pretty laid back.
Tyra: No. it was fine.
Greg: It was really relaxed and we all kind of went with whatever was going on at the moment. We all shared books and talked to each other. I'd honestly say 90% of the time is spent talking with other inmates about all their crazy stories and how they arrested. There was some pretty funny people in Jail.
Eric: There was no competition that I saw really, occasionally if someone felt they were cut in line for ping pong there was a slight argument, but it never went far. Also the TV at times was a cause for some controversy, especially when the Spanish speaking inmates would watch Spanish TV.

JM: Did you have a hard time staying in shape while in jail?
Blake: You could only work out outside. But I made by.
Tyra: not really.
Greg: I didn't really try. But there were guys who would do what they could to work out without any equipment.
Eric: Yes, but as time went by it became a priority and something to do. It takes a while to feel better off drugs, and then also to adjust to the type of food, so you can end up feeling quite sluggish, and that on top of depression or whatever anxietys you have can make it hard to be motivated, at least for me, others were the opposite.

JM: How often did you get to go outside? What did you do outside if you were allowed to? If you were not allowed to go outside what could you do for exercise?
Blake: Depend on the guard on duty.
Tyra: Once, but I was sleeping.
Greg: It was cold and raining almost every day, On the one good day we had we didn't get to go out because there wasn't enough guards they said.
Eric: You were not allowed to excersise unless it was outside, however some gaurds were lenient if it was done respectfully. in the tanks for the most part it is an hour a day. However in min security it is an all day open yard, and you even get to go outside to work. You could only do body resistence workouts, and a pullup pushup bar was there.

JM: Did the jail offer church services? If so, what were they like and when were they held?
Blake: WE had a minister come into our block. I've heard better preaching.
Tyra: Not that I am aware of.
Greg: They did but most of the guy's weren't really into it. Most did it just to break the boredom I think.
Eric: Yes, i did not partake but there was christian and catholic services from what I saw, not much else. They were held sundays and one night a week which varied I believe.
