Interview with Christian, Robert, Terry, Diana, Gina and Cindy
JM: Did you find it difficult to get along with other inmates? Please give examples to explain why you did or didn't. Christian: i was fortunate to be placed on a pod where
everybody got along.in 90 days there was only
three fights. few arguments the ither inmates new
i was indigent as hell and would give me the food
off there trays that they didint eat Chris: No I'm a pretty mellow person so I didn't really talk to anyone.I
pretty much stayed to myself played in my bed and tried to
slepp the ten days I was sentenced to awayI did see other use
inmates in altercations over the phone and what was being
watched on TV. Robert: I didn't have any problems with other inmates as
I kept to myself as much as possible, it did get
very aggravating listing to all the stories and
loud noise in there Terry: For my first 4 days I was kept in a room alone. So
i did not have to deal with very many people at
all. There were not calls, not shower breaks no
nothing. Just food at meal time. Diana: Some of the girls were rude and snobby and I got in a argument
with one girl but other than that everyone was overall everyone
was pretty easy to get along with. Gina: I keep to myself. But there was a lot of fight going on around
me .nobody got along a lot of screaming and name calling. I
keep to myself due to there where a lot of girls that would sit
around talk about when they got out how they where going to
do ticks to get heroine Cindy: yes it can be difficuklt there is alot of
defferent personalities in one pod that you have
to deal with i just stayed in my room and read
books and stayed away from everyone
JM: What types of things did you have to do to avoid problems or fights with other inmates? Christian: i was on a rally cool piod as far as the inmates
go now there was acouple of c.o. that would try
to starts problems with the inmates even try to
provoke the inmates into fighting but as far as
me avoiding fights was no problem but that was
because of the attitudes of the other inmates Chris: I pretty much stayed to myself and slept took showers went to
rec where I just walked the yard and tried to stay out of trouble
there were some inmates that would start fights just because
the wanted to see if you were going to let them take advantage
of you and stealing peoples commissary. Or talked ng smack
to see if they could get you riled up. Robert: well I was in there I didn't have much to say , I
was shocked to be in there, so I just kept quiet
an gave short answers to any questions people
asked me, and I gave away some of my food cuase I
didn't like it ,I just ate the apples an drinks Terry: There were a few gangs in the facility but I
avoided them. I pretty much tried to avoid
everyone and just do what I had to do but I was
informed I best start talking to others or it
would cause trouble. So I just talked to the
people the played chess and checkers mostly Diana: I had to make sure not to judge anyone or to steal, lie, or eat
anyone else's food. Also you need to stay to yourself and stay in
your room and not go in anyone else's room and to stay quiet at
night and to not to change the channel when people are watching
TV. Gina: I stayed my room and did a lot of reading I slept a lot didn't
hang out with anyone keep to myself also got a job in laundry
where I would work about 8 hours a day went to any meets or
class they would have which wasn't a lot of Cindy: i just stayed to myself so that i didnt have any
confrontations with anyone. i read books and
talked to my cell mate it just isnt worth
getting into a fight with someone over a phone
or a tv program. and it is so loud out in the
day room
JM: Were you able to choose an inmate as your cellmate if you knew one? How often would your cellmate(s) change? Christian: i never got to choose my cell mate. i went
through seven cell mates in the 90 period some
went to a rehab one went to be deported two went
the penetentery the rest were released Chris: Queens gate was a dorm like facility with like eighty beds or
so.so you weren't able to pick and choose where you slept or
who was near you.inmates were coming and going on a daily
basis Robert: no you don't get to choose your inmates,
cellmates would come an go everyday, I guess they
all had different charges , I didn't know anyone
in there anyway, sucked, time goes slow Terry: No, once transferred you were in a dorm with 150
to 200 people
each side and two officers. So you were assigned a
bunk and there you stayed until the time you left. Diana: No, I was not able to choose an inmate as my cellmate but i was
lucky enough to have a funny crazy nice inmate. My cellmate never
changed but a lot of other inmates had different inmates. Gina: No u couldn't choose a cell mate and they would change
sometimes everyday and then there would be times the cos
would change you cause people wasn't getting along with one
another Cindy: no you are assigned a cell mate that they give
you and it doesnt work for the most part. i just
ask to change it if i did not like them.
